VNS INFLUENZA (FLU) VACCINATION GUIDELINES FOR CHILDREN

The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommends that children 6-23 months be vaccinated annually against influenza (flu), unless contraindications are present. Because of this information, VNS will again offer special Children's clinics in 2005-2006. Click here for this year's pediatric clinics.

Two flu shots are recommended by the ACIP for children under the age of 9 should who have not previously received a flu shot. These children would receive the two doses of influenza vaccine at least one month apart.

Also, very young children (6 months- 24 months) generally receive two half doses, one month apart.

Children 24 months to 17 years of age are encouraged to be vaccinated.

VNS will set up appointments to meet the demands of the second shot unless there is a crisis resulting in a shortage. Our goal is to save back the serum for the second shot if the parent makes the request at the time of the first immunization and leaves a $5 deposit towards the second shot. The deposit will be returned if a crisis occurs.

The cost of a flu shot is $25. Half doses for children 36 months and younger is $15. Pneumonia shots will also be available at $35. VNS will bill Medicare for individuals who present their Medicare Part-B card at a clinic site and have Medicare as their primary provider.

Flu Mist

VNS will also have live attenuated intranasal vaccine (Flu Mist) available at two clinics and by appointment. Call 722-8200 to schedule an appointment. Flu Mist is approved only for healthy persons aged 5-49 years, unless contraindications are present, such as being in the same house with a person with a compromised immune system. To schedule an appointment call (317) 722-8200 and ask for the Flu department.
